Disappointing Afro-Beats Snubs At The 2023 Grammy Nominations List

The Grammys have been known for being notoriously misinformed about certain genres especially when it comes to nominations and the awards.

The most notorious victim of this misinformation is Hip-Hop, with the nominations being bashed for lacking a criteria when selecting songs for consideration.

Snoop Dogg who is considered a legend in the hip-hop industry can be used as an example as he has never won a single Grammy.

The new entrant to this snubbed category has been Afrobeats which was recently added as a category along side Bongo, Amapiano & Genge.

It was highly excepted that Rema would be nominated for an award , considering the fact that his song Calm Down is the first Afro beats song to cross a billion streams on all digital platforms in 2023 .

Rema’s snub came as a shock as his fellow compatriots Burna Boy, Olamide, Asake, Ayra Starr & Davido got nominations other huge acts such as Wizkid, Sauti Sol & Diamond Platnumz were also snubbed.

But as the shock was settling the Grammys added another shockwave when they nominated water hit maker Tyla who hails from South Africa, ignoring the late rapper AKA who delivered an out of this world posthumous album dubbed mass country

South Africans were hopeful that the late award winning rapper who took South African Rap international would scoop a nomination but the recording academy snub over a recently released pop song has spoken volumes.

As I summarize this it would be also important to note that Kenyan group Jabali Africa project Watu Moja was completely overlooked in what seems to be ironic as the group scooped a nomination with All One Tribe Collection for the 2022 Grammy awards for best children’s music category.
